Living Here
A quieter life, close to everything you need
Casa Comodín sits in Vereda Quebrada Arriba, a green valley behind la piedra El Peñol, ten minutes from Guatapé. Here’s what daily life looks like, including the parts brochures usually leave out.
A day in the valley
The day begins early, with birds. You might start with a cold dip in the creek, or coffee on the deck while mist lifts off the forest. Work happens on fibre internet, fast enough for video calls and uploads. Around midday, you could drive or cycle to town for the market, lunch at a corner restaurant, or a swim in the lake. Evenings are cool enough for a blanket and quiet enough to hear the creek again.
The land around you
Behind the property lies protected public forest that will never be developed, with a path down to the lake. The valley is home to 15 different bird species, including Kolibri's, Barranqueros and Green Jays . Titi Monkeys pass through the bamboo regularly. At 1,920 metres, temperatures stay between 16 and 24 °C all year. There’s no need for heating or air conditioning, just a sweater in the evening.
Guatapé, the town
Guatapé is small, colourful and easy to walk. Every house carries painted zócalos along its walls. The town has a daily rhythm of bakeries, fruit stalls, hardware shops, cafés and restaurants, and the lake offers kayaking, sailing and swimming. On weekends and holidays, visitors from Medellín fill the town square. The valley stays quiet, and on weekdays the town returns to its locals.
Getting around
Medellín is about 1.5 hours by car, and José María Córdova International Airport is about an hour away, with direct flights to the US and connections to Europe. Rionegro and Marinilla, both under an hour away, have larger supermarkets, hardware stores and specialist services. Buses connect Guatapé with Medellín throughout the day.
Healthcare
Guatapé has a local hospital for everyday care and emergencies. Specialist clinics and hospitals are available in Rionegro and Medellín, both within about an hour. Many residents choose a Colombian private health plan or international insurance, depending on their needs.
What it costs
A couple can live comfortably here, car included, for about €1,000 a month, excluding housing. A simpler life costs closer to €350. Fresh produce is cheap and plentiful, and the property’s utility bills are low: fibre internet, electricity and water together cost under €80 a month.
Community
Guatapé has a mix of long-time locals, Colombian families from Medellín, and a growing community of foreigners: remote workers, retirees and people running small businesses. Neighbours in the vereda know each other. Spanish makes a real difference here. Even basic Spanish opens doors, and local classes and conversation groups are easy to find.
Good to know
Life here moves at its own pace. Paperwork takes patience. It rains most afternoons in the two wet seasons (roughly April to May and October to November), which is why the valley is so green. And the town gets busy on holiday weekends.
